Cale,
Teylah
After delivering Teylah’s medicine to Mommy in it’s plastic syringe, I return downstairs to dose out Cale’s in a similar plastic syringe. (Ah the joys of ear infections!) Upon returning to the room, which was dark when I left it, the light in on full brightness, Teylah is lying on the bed crying, Mommy is not initially visible. I go to give Cale his medicine, and notice Mommy stepping up onto the bed, and cleaning pink stuff from the ceiling (coincidently, the very same shade of pink as Teylah’s medicine). What on Earth? How did her medicine end up on the ceiling? Did she really put up that much of a fight, and that’s why she’s crying?
No, nothing of the sort, as it turns out. Apparently Mommy thought the syringe was empty, and went to set it down on her dresser. Splat! Pushing the syringe down onto the dresser results in the last little bit of remaining medicine flying up the ceiling and leaving a couple of lovely pink polka-dots.

After dinner this evening, while sitting at The Coffee Shop, the boy decides that he would like to go into the adjacent room. It’s a room with plush lounge chairs, a skin rug (likely from a cow), lower lighting, and college-age students hanging out talking, using their computers, and/or studying.
He is shy about going in at first, asking one of us to go in with him. We tell him he can go in himself, it’s alright. No one in there is going to bite. He finally starts to go, but comes back for his cup of hot chocolate, so he can have a cup like everyone else in the room.
He makes his way in and sits down on a chair next to the coffee table, which he has placed his drink on. He begins to strike up a conversation with the ladies in the room, sitting nearby. Oh yeah!
They talked about ASU (he was wearing an ASU sweatshirt), elks, colors, coral, fire alarms and sprinklers. His mommy poked her head in a couple of times, and the boy had to tell her “Mommy, can you please leave me alone?” It’s hard to get any action with your mom watching over your shoulder. In addition to popping his head out at one point to tell his mommy “I love you,” he also told the girls he loves them, according to his account of the events.
I don’t think he got any phone numbers, but he’ll learn. He has a very good start on the flirting though.

Last night, after Cale had gone to lay down for the night, he came back downstairs and asked for some food. I told him that he could not have more food – he already had dinner, and it was time for him to go to sleep (he has a habit of eating lightly at dinner, and then getting more food later before bed – not a good habit). Well, he did not like my response, but he didn’t fuss or argue. Just sulked his way back upstairs.
After another 20 or 30 minutes, as I am going upstairs, I pass Cale and Mommy in the hallway. Apparently he told her “That’s right, you said I could have a banana with dinner.” He wasn’t satisfied with the answer of no food, so his little in his little Juris Doctorate mind, he pondered it and remembered that a banana had been committed to him, but had not been delivered. According to the oral contract, he was entitled to one banana, which he happily consumed upon delivery.

We were having countdowns for a rocket liftoff (well, actually a microphone acting as a rocket) and Cale wanted me to count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Well, I started counting – “Cinco, cuatro, tres,…”
“No! Not in Spanish! Count in normal!”
“Oh, you mean five, four, three, two, one? That’s called English, Cale. The language we speak is called English.”
I guess sometimes we overlook the obvious things as we try to teach.

Ahhhh… my boy. Gotta love him. This evening I finally managed to stop at a couple of stores and pick up some items that I had been wanting to get for Cale for a little while now. Comic books. I managed to find three of the more traditional variety of comic books, and one that is smaller and thicker in form, but still cartoony. Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Star Wars Clone Wars (in the style of the Cartoon Network version). When I showed him the cover of the Green Lantern comic, I told him “Green Lantern is my favorite!” And, his reply which made me so proud, “Green lantern is my favorite too!”

Yes, somewhere between today and the past couple/few days, the boy has located the number 15. This number has been lost for quite some time. Just about the time we taught him that 15 followed 14 and preceded 16, he managed to always leave it out as he counted upward, on his merry way. He has been able to count to 20 quite well, and for quite some time, though minus the aforementioned 15. (After 20, he has a tendency to jump around a bit… 20, 21, 26, 28, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29…) Ahh, 15, where have you been all these many long months? The real question – were you only missing from Cale’s mind, or did you vanish from the minds of two and three year olds everywhere?

Today, after getting home from dinner, the boy sits up on the couch, holding a stick, waving it as a conductor’s baton, and instructs us to sit.
“Ok, it’s time to sit and sing” (to paraphrase).
Waving his baton about, he begins “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star…” and we join in and sing.
Next comes “Bringing Home a Baby Bumble Bee…”
And finally “Tiger, Tiger, Tiger Ti…”
What? You don’t know that one? It is sung to the same tune as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Does that help?
After some rousing songs, he dismisses us to go and play. Indicates that the “diggers station” was closed, but the “ball station” was open.
Apparently he’s learning some stuff at school. :)

I hold up a dvd case so that only Dawn can see it, proposing a movie for the boy to watch this evening. “Wha’d'ya think?”
“Sure.”
Insert movie, play.
“What movie is it?” asks the small voice.
“What movie do you think it is?”
“I think it’s Star Wars.”
Holy $&*@!!
The kid did not see the movie, or know what was being chosen, yet somehow he knows which movie it is, despite the fact that ordinarily it would have been some animated film for him to watch.
After the movie: “I’m a big boy now!”
Dawn realizes that in fact, he had been told in the past that he could not watch Star Wars until he was a big boy. He was very excited that he has now reached that milestone. He is so cool!

Cale, after seeing Stomp on tv…
“Daddy, later I want to put trash cans on my feet and walk better.”

Considering my current employment status, you’d think this might be about me. But no, just checking in on my son’s latest career goals.
“Cale, what do you want to be when you grow up?”
“A firefighter.”
